You can also search between several low cost bus options, depending on your travel dates and destinations. Of course there are also guided tours available, but they come with a higher cost.

Four Amazing Day Trips from Munich:

1. Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site

When visiting Europe it is important to remember to atrocities of the Holocaust not only to remember those who were murdered, but to prevent and stop similar acts from happening. The Dachau Concentration Camp opened just several months after Hitler’s election as German Chancellor.

Through the rise of the Nazi regime, Dachau grew in terms of size and murderous crimes, through forced labor and mass killings. Dachau eventually served as a model for the other Nazi concentration camps across Europe.

By its liberation in 1945, there were over 30,000 people murdered at Dachau with no true numbers known. The area is now home to a memorial site with extensive information and five separate religious memorials.

To reach Dachau it is just a 20 minute train ride from Munich. It is open daily from 9AM to 5PM and is free to enter.

2. Neuschwanstein Castle and Füssen

Neuschwanstein Castle and Füssen

Have you ever wanted to see the real life inspiration for the Disney castle? Did you even know there is a real life inspiration? Well, either way, the Neuschwanstein Castle is a must to visit. The castle was built by the reclusive king Ludwig II of Bavaria in the late 1800s. This whimsical castle never was completed due to its high costs and the king’s eventual death.

While the outside of the castle and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking, the visit inside is less than exciting. So, if the cost or time is prohibitive, do not feel bad about skipping the tour. The best place to get a photo of the castle is from the nearby Marienbrücke Bridge.

To reach the castle you have to travel through the small beautiful town of Füssen. This quaint Bavarian town makes for some amazing photos in the historic center. It is a great way to round off your day trip before heading back to Munich.

Directions from Munich to Fussen, where you have to catch a local bus to Neuschwanstein (stop “Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein Castles, Schwangau”).

3. Nuremberg

Nuremberg

Nuremberg is a beautiful old city that is not only rich in history, but vibrant in culture to this day. Explore the medieval Nuremberg Castle in the middle of the old town. The Frauenkirche is one place not to miss, with its breathtaking brick Gothic architecture.

If you are lucky enough to be visiting in the wintertime, you have to visit one of the country’s most famous Christmas Markets, Christkindlesmarkt.

Nuremberg is less than a two hour drive from Munich. If you do not have a car, there are dozens of trains each day heading between the cities.

4. Herrenchiemsee Castle

Herrenchiemsee Castle

The Herrenchiemsee Castle is an amazing unfinished castle on a small island in the Chiemsee lake, just a hour drive from Munich. On the island there are many other buildings to explore as well. This beautiful oasis is a great day trip from Munich during the warm summer days.

To reach Herrenchiemsee Castle from Munich, follow the directions provided on the castle themselves. Remember, it is an island so you will need to take a short ferry ride to reach the Herrenchiemsee Castle.
