Underwater photos with the LifeProof Fre case

LifeProof Fre Case for iPhone 5s

Last year my wife purchased a LifeProof iPhone 5s Fre Case as a general case to prevent cracks and scratches on her iPhone 5s after several broken screens. It worked well as the phone has successfully survived many drops, rainstorms and adventures.

It was not until more recently that we really took advantage of the waterproof capabilities of the LifeProof case. It is important to note that the case is only rated for underwater usage up to 6.6 feet or 2 meters. This makes it a great accessory for the pool or while snorkeling!

Nothing was more exciting than putting on a snorkel mask and looking at all the fish swimming in the ocean. This case made it possible to take snapshots home with us at the end of the day. It is also fun with friends to take some photos of ridiculous attempts at smiles underwater. It is also perfect to relax in a hot tub and not have to worry about destroying your phone.

The only downside to the case is its longterm user durability. Opening and closing the case to access the charger port causes more damage to the case than one would expect. Opening it begins to peal apart the rubber seal as you can see in the photo below.

The only upside to this problem is LifeProofs amazing customer service. Simply send them a photo of the broken case and a new replacement is quickly in the mail. The lifetime warranty for this case is one I see myself having to utilize frequently.

I would suggest this case as a summer case. It is perfect for the beach or pool. Unfortunately, the durability of the case makes it impossible for full time use. Even with sporadic usage the case begins to fail after several months. You have to consider if the awesome underwater photography capabilities are worth the price and effort to get warranty replacements. For us, it was a good choice.

As my wife put it, “if you are willing to contact customer service every six months, this is the best case ever.” We can capture memories of our beach and pool times without having to worry.

If you need a waterproof camera on a regular basis or for scuba diving this case is not for you. As I am currently training for my PADI Open Water Diver certificate, I would suggest a GoPro for diving photos, which comes with a waterproof case up to 40 meters.
